The Illuminations

The Daniel Wildenstein Donation of 313miniatures collected by the donor's father came to the Marmottan Museum in 1981. This unique collection includes works from the English, French, Italian and Flemish schools, from the 13th to 16th century.

Removed from the books they originally appeared in, they are mostly on parchment and offer the public a comprehensive introduction to this aspect of ornamental and illustrative art.

From gothic lettering executed in France in the 13th century down to the pictorial miniatures of Giulio Clovio (1560), these manuscript pages were initially of a religious character.

Later created to satisfy the pious inclinations of the influential or to serve in inventories, they are also an invaluable source of information on life in the Middle Ages.
