Ecole de Ferrare - XVe siècle |
The works by German, Flemish and Italian primitive painters appearing in the Museum's collection were acquired during the Second Empire by Jules Marmottan, director of the Bruay mines and paymaster for the Department of the Gironde. Most of them had been bought between 1847 and 1880 from a Lille art-dealer based in Cologne.
Including Renaissance tapestries - notably the set of three portraying the Hunting of St Suzanne - and Dirk Bouts' The Crucifixion, this collection testifies to the remarkable taste of an enlightened art-lover.
